Bontharambo Homestead
Bontharambo Homestead is located outside Wangaratta and is included in the Victorian Heritage Register [place number H0359] for its historical, architectural, aesthetic and scientific (technological) significance to the State of Victoria. The property remains in the ownership of the Docker family and has done so since their patriarch Joseph Docker moved his family to that area 1838. The two-storey Italianate mansion was built c.1857-59, and several other buildings - including remnants of a second homestead, Chinese gardener’s cottage, private family cemetery, stables and other outbuildings - together form a highly intact homestead complex.
Quatrefoil teamed up with Greg Owen from Period Building Conservation to inspect some of the roof framing in the main house. A series of inventive but unorthodox historical repairs complicated things somewhat, but ultimately the roof framing was deemed adequate and minimal repairs were prescribed.
