The two most exciting ideas in this fantastic building are its comprehensive ESD principles - locally sourced and reclaimed bricks, sustainable timbers and high-tech passive thermal and air quality control demonstrate to the students it accommodates what high-quality built environment can achieve - and its innovative use of brick and steel. The massing of the building is deconstructed by surprising (and tricky to detail!) geometry and patterns. Only a small number of the windows and perforation in the facade are rectilinear, and very few columns are not dynamically angled. Corrugation and 'folding' is a particular theme and has even been applied to a three-story masonry wrap.
The building's program demanded very large internal spaces - the main stage can accommodate a complete symphony orchestra of 120 musicians - but the bespoke detailing extended into the smaller and more intimate ones too, such as the beautiful cantilevered steel stair.
