Strzelecki Monument, Traralgon

Follow the Princes Highway northeast out of Traralgon and on the right hand (south) side of the highway, about 4km from the town centre at Victory Park, you’ll find the Strzelecki Monument. This monument commemorates the passage of Count Edmund de Strzelecki through the area on the 18th April 1840. It was the first of four such monuments that mark various points on Strzelecki’s route. The monument was built in 1927, with bronze plaques added in 1966. The monument is included in the Heritage Overlay of the Latrobe Planning Scheme as HO128 - Strzelecki Memorial. It had to be relocated to facilitate the duplication of the Princes Highway.

Rosedale Monument, Rosedale

This monument is one of four structures included in the Lyons Street Beautification Trees and Memorial Reserve, which is included on the Heritage Overlay of the Wellington Planning Scheme as HO325. It was erected in 1935 to commemorate those from the district who gave their lives during WWI, with subsequent plaques installed later to commemorate those who gave their lives in WWII. The monument had to be relocated to enable the upgrading of a nearby major roundabout.

South African Soldiers Memorial, South Melbourne

The South African Soldiers Memorial is included in the Victorian Heritage Register [place number H1374] and is of historical, social and aesthetic significance to the State of Victoria. The monument is an impressive 21m obelisk and was constructed between 1922-24 to commemorate the Australians who lost their lives in the Boer War between 1899 and 1902. The monument was carefully dismantled and stored during the construction of the nearby Anzac Station, part of the Metro Tunnel project, and will be reinstated into the Albert Road Reserve at the project’s completion.
