New student accommodation was designed by Lovell Chen (http://www.lovellchen.com.au/lc/ormond-college-grad/) adjacent to some of Melbourne University's oldest and grandest buildings, as well as some notable hexagonal buildings from the 1950s & '60s by Grounds, Romberg and Boyd. The extruded circular volumes are a modern take on the geometrical rigor of these neighboring structures, and made for some interesting steel framing arrangements, and even more interesting connections! The design also featured a folded steel stair, and a sophisticated landscaping plan which complicated the civil and drainage works in that the site is earmarked for further development, and is also home to existing plantings and a number of protected mature trees. Ormond College was completed in two stages, with the second and final building opening in 2016.
